Tracey’s Holiday Turnip Puff Recipe
- 6 cups cubed turnips, or rutabaga. Wait, before you go cubing that
- 2 Tbsps. butter
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 3 Tbsps. flour
- 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/8 tsp ground black pepper
- pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup fine breadcrumbs
- 2 Tbsps. melted butter
Tracey’s Holiday Turnip Puff Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a medium size casserole dish.
- Boil turnip in a medium saucepan until tender. *See Recipe Hack for easy turnip cooking tip
- Drain and mash.
- Add butter and egg and mix well.
- Combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, and nutmeg in a small bowl.
- Mix into the turnip mixture.
- Pour turnip mixture into buttered casserole dish.
- Combine breadcrumbs and melted butter. Spread evenly over turnip mixture.
- Bake for 25 minutes or until light brown on top.
*Recipe Hack. Place whole turnip on wax or parchment paper and microwave on HIGH for 4 mins. Let cool and peal. Dice and finish softening by boiling. This hack softens the turnip making it much easier to slice and cube. root vegetable.

What is Turnip?
Turnips belong to the same family of vegetables that include collards, kale, broccoli, and brussel sprouts that thrive in temperate climates. Cultivated mainly for their white rounded roots, turnip sprouts and leaves are also eaten and quite nutritious. Turnips are a wise choice to add to a healthy diet, since they supply a host of benefits. Consumed since olden times and found mainly in northern Europe, turnip was a basic food staple in Roman and Greek cuisine.
Turnips grow as much as two feet high, with elongated hairy leaves. While they are available all year, they are enjoyed best in the spring and fall since they are sweet and small during this period. The older and bigger the turnip gets, the blander its taste becomes. Turnips keep quite well.
